VARIOKLAV steam sterilizers
VARIOKLAV steam sterilisers
The VARIOKLAV BlueLine offers top-quality basic units that are ideally equipped for all routine tasks in a microbiology laboratory: autoclave liquids, solids and culture media at temperatures between 121° and 134° Celsius with precision, validability and reproducibility.
Our steam sterilizers operate reliably and quickly, and offer plenty of space for instruments and bulky items. Thanks to numerous design advantages, such as our particularly flat steam generators, the VARIOKLAV® BlueLine autoclaves are among the best-selling steam sterilizers in their class throughout Germany.
The VARIOKLAV BlueLine offers top-quality basic units that are ideally equipped for all routine tasks in a microbiology laboratory: autoclave liquids, solids and culture media at temperatures between 121° and 134° Celsius with precision, validability and reproducibility.
All the advantages and features of the VARIOKLAV BlueLine steam sterilizers at a glance:
- High-quality stainless steel construction and low-wear fittings
- Floor-standing autoclaves with a small footprint and loading capacities from 75 to 155 litres
- Front-loading benchtop autoclaves with loading capacities from 25 to 195 litres
- Flexibly expandable with modules for cooling, vacuum generation, exhaust air filtration, condensate sterilisation, media temperature control and process documentation
A key feature of our VARIOKLAV® autoclaves is their high-quality construction: all components of our steam sterilisers are optimised for maximum durability and ensure smooth operations in your day-to-day laboratory work. Low-seal stainless steel fittings and an ultra-flat steam generator also make it easy to clean the autoclave and the sterilisation chamber.
The modular design of our steam sterilizers also offers you the option of customising your unit to meet a wide range of requirements:
- Modules for cooling and rapid cooling: Choose from cooling modules with water-cooled jackets, spray cooling or sprinkler systems for cooling processes up to 80% shorter
- Modules for fractional pre-vacuum and vacuum drying: This extension ensures safe sterilisation processes for porous and hard-to-de-aerate items. The vacuum drying module enables the removal of dry and sterile vented materials.
- Modules for exhaust air filtration with condensate sterilisation: Ideal for the safe sterilisation of infectious laboratory waste in protection classes 2 to 4 and genetically modified materials from laboratories at biosafety levels 2 to 4.
- Modules for process documentation: Our GLP and IMS GMP batch printers enable legally compliant and regulation-compliant documentation of all process parameters.
Modules for media temperature control: The VARIOKLAV® media temperature control ensures precise and safe sterilisation processes even with large volumes of liquid and temperature-sensitive sterile goods

The VARIOKLAV® autoclaves are available in three different nominal diameters and four different volumes. In our floor-standing units, steam generation can be carried out either directly in the chamber or separately. The sterilisation chamber is free of heating elements and feed water. The compressed air supply for the seal control circuit, safety interlock and pneumatic control valves is self-contained.
The VARIOKLAV® benchtop units impress with outstanding capacity in a minimal footprint: our compact benchtop autoclaves are equipped with space-saving swing doors and offer loading capacities of up to 65 litres.
Thanks to a particularly space-saving design, there are neither heating elements nor feed water inside the chamber, which makes cleaning the chamber particularly easy. Furthermore, the benchtop autoclave can be installed at almost any height, allowing for comfortable loading and unloading of the sterilisation chamber regardless of the user’s height.
The versatile programme control of our benchtop steam sterilizers guarantees maximum flexibility for all standard laboratory tasks.
How VARIOKLAV® BlueLine steam sterilizers work
In the medical sector and in microbiology, autoclaves are part of the basic equipment of every laboratory. They are required there to sterilise medical devices, culture media or laboratory waste using a validatable process. Steam, pressure and heat create conditions within the autoclave’s sterilisation chamber under which germs and bacteria are eliminated and pathogens are killed.
In the basic version, every VARIOKLAV® BlueLine autoclave consists of a pressure vessel made of high-quality stainless steel, which can be sealed pressure-tight with a solid door. Heating elements integrated into the jacket then heat the steam inside the sterilisation chamber. Digital control modules and additional module options enable optimal monitoring of all parameters even during the sterilisation process.
The sterilisation process can be divided into four steps: The ramp-up phase refers to the venting stage. During this phase, all residual air is removed from the sterilisation chamber so that the steam can subsequently completely envelop the items to be sterilised. For particularly thorough air removal, the VARIOKLAV® BlueLine autoclave can be upgraded with a module for fractional pre-vacuum.
In the second step, the sterilisation chamber is filled with saturated, pressurised steam. This steam consists of demineralised water and is generated by the heating elements integrated into the jacket. This heating phase is also referred to as the equilibration period, as rising temperatures only propagate through the items being sterilised after a time lag. An optional module for media temperature control with a temperature sensor facilitates the sterilisation of temperature-sensitive media and protects them from damage caused by thermal stress.
Once the heating phase is complete, the actual sterilisation phase begins: the items to be sterilised remain in the sterilisation chamber for a specific period of time so that the steam can take effect. How long a sterilisation phase should last depends on the individual microbial load and the sterilisation temperature.
In the final step, the steam is vented from the sterilisation chamber and the items to be sterilised can cool down. Drying the items after sterilisation is particularly important, as their moisture content must not exceed certain tolerance limits in order for the material to be released for subsequent storage or use. For this purpose, VARIOKLAV® BlueLine sterilisers can be equipped with a vacuum drying module, which creates a deep vacuum at the end of the sterilisation cycle, thereby removing any residual moisture.
